Sleeping At Last is the moniker of Chicago-based singer-songwriter, producer and composer, Ryan O’Neal. Every year he comes up with at least one Xmas song. In 2016 he put them all together on the LP/CD Christmas Collection. This year he surprises us with a very original choice: 'Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep' a beautiful song written by Irving Berlin. It's sung by Bing Crosby in the film '.White Christmas'.

Mix: 34. Akira Inoue Special II (Guest Mix by Francis Heaney)

Note: Guest, Francis Heaney, rejoins us to share the second part of his mix series covering Japan’s incomparable Akira Inoue. This time around the focus is on his brilliant collaborative work with others like Aska Kaneko, David Rhodes, and many more. I’ll let Francis take it from here…

I thought I’d tell you a bit about some of the other musicians that Inoue collaborates with here and on the previous mix, many of whom crop up repeatedly. The violinist Aska Kaneko appears on a number of these songs; Aska Strings is her string ensemble, to which Inoue contributed a composition. She’s also a member of the Issimbow band and the Voice Project, which also featured singer Sumiko Yamagata and koto player Masako Kawamura.

Sumiko Yamagata’s 歌が降りてくる 2010 album was produced and partly written by Inoue with writing and arranging contributions from Kaneko among others, including Takuo Yamamoto, who also played on Issimbow and is the primary member of Halocline, the wind ensemble that appears on “Tikkap.” Koto player Masako Kawamura’s solo album features four compositions by Inoue as well as two by David Rhodes, a guitarist best known for his work in Peter Gabriel’s band.

David Rhodes and Akira Inoue collaborated on two albums, Head, Hands, and Feet and Snowflake (the latter of which contains their music interpolated into two readings of a Paul Gallico story, in English by Peter Gabriel and in Japanese by Akiko Yano), and Rhodes also appears frequently on other albums, including those by Nozomi Odagi. Odagi was a model who released two albums and one EP, all of which were produced and primarily written by Inoue; I don’t know how they came to work together, but the output reminds me of some of the albums by Prince’s proteges, which sound like Prince albums with a guest singer.

The Yoshida Brothers are a shamisen duo who are known for their flamboyant instrumental skills; Inoue has periodically played keyboards, composed, and arranged for them. Yoriko Ganeko is a noted Okinawan folk singer, whose album mostly consists of traditional songs as well as songs written by her father (also a famed Okinawan singer) in arrangements by Inoue, but he also contributes an original song, two versions of which frame the album. As it happens, Ganeko has also released two albums with Chuei Yoshikawa, the jazz guitarist represented here by his duo album with Inoue, Rainbow.

Then there’s 井山大今, a fusion band with Inoue on keyboards, Kenji Takamizu on bass, Hideo Yamaki on drums, and Tsuyoshi Kon on guitar (you may remember some of these musicians from previous posts here: Hideo Yamaki recorded Shadow Run and Tsuyoshi Kon appears on Akira Inoue’s acoustic jazz album, Dolphin). I don’t know too much about Kyoko Yoshida, but I believe she mostly works in a traditional classical vein; Inoue wrote three arrangements for Kyoko Yoshida Plays the Beatles. Yukari Ito is a pop singer with a lot of albums, and while Inoue only contributes to one that I know of, she’s also worked with other notable songwriters, including Tsugutoshi Goto. As for P.T. Job, it appears to be a one-off band featuring Sumiko Yamagata and Tomoko Soryo as a singing duo, but maybe one of you readers knows more?? In any case, not knowing the background of the band should not impede your enjoyment of one of the catchiest songs I have heard in a while.

Akira Inoue II Mix

  2. Akira Inoue, “Spacesnics #2” from Lensman (Soundtrack)
  3. Yoshida Brothers, “Rising” — single

  5. Akira Inoue, “ワスラフのいちご狩り (Cueillette Des Fraises De Vaslav)” from Karsavina
  6. Nozomi Odagi, “Water Lilies” from Nymphéas
  7. Akira Inoue, “Centrifugal Focus” from Criteria
  8. P.T. Job, “西武 ’84「うれしいね、サッちゃん」(Seibu ’84 – I’m Happy, Satchan)” from Akira Inoue: CM Works
  9. Akira Inoue, “That You Are Here” from Seven Paraphrases on the Theme of ‘The Fall of Freddie the Leaf’
  10. Masako Kawamura, “Baratata-Batake” from Between the Lines
  11. Akira Inoue & David Rhodes, “Sense” from Head, Hands, and Feet

Merry 2019 Christmas!!!

Hello, and welcome back to the Christmas roulette that is Ernie (Not Bert) this time of year! I've got a lot of stuff to share with you this year, about half of it new and about half of it remasters of old shares from the 14 years I've been doing this crazy thing. I don't have a lot to say this early in the season, other than I hope you find something fun to listen to among the shares here. Don't forget that there are three years worth of shares in the archives, most of which have good download links.  Some of the older things will have the link in the comments, so don't forget to look in there. And while you're there, don't forget to leave me a comment or two.  Blogs run on comments, and if I don't get comments on a share, I have no way of knowing if anyone is paying attention.  In the old days, I could see how many times something was being downloaded, but not anymore. So if I don't get any comments, I assume no one cares. (I think the record for comments on a post was 30 on an old intro like this one, so let's see if we can beat that, OK?) Also of interest to you might be Christmas in July from this past year.  A whole month with two posts a day of Christmas music from albums that aren't considered Christmas related.  Over 800 tracks of random stuff, there's bound to be something in there for everyone. If you aren't familiar with how the downloads work, just leave a comment and myself or one of my friendly little elves will help you out.  It's a pretty simple process. I think, but then I've been doing this a long time, and I thought torrents were easy, so there you go.  Anyhow, the Christmas shares will start soon, and run through Christmas (or maybe Epiphany, depending on how I'm feeling), so come back often.  And if you put my songs on your Christmas comp, send me a copy, I love to see how people enjoy my music.  Well, it's not really my music, I just find it in the deep dark recesses of the thrift stores and try to bring it back to life.  You won't find anything on here that's available on Amazon or iTunes or Spotify or on CD, at least not if I can help it.  I try to share the stuff that's been forgotten or lost or was never known to begin with. A lot of this stuff has made it's way to the streaming world in the past few years, and I think that's a great thing.  The more folks hear this stuff, the more interesting the world becomes.  And as that's happened, I've broadened my horizons to independent releases, local stuff, things that aren't brought to you by a major label.  It's all good, give it a listen and see.  Thanks for visiting! Feliz Navidad!

PS-Bonus points if you know where the Christmas tree above is from, and double points if you can ID the original artist. :)

From the back cover: The background story of Harry Marshard is as warm, vigorous, colorful and outstanding as his music.

It wasn't just one long jump from drummer in his high school orchestra to America's foremost society dance band leader. There was time out for World War II, where he enlisted as a private, served in the 42nd Infantry, Rainbow Division, and came home, after the Battle Of The Bulge and the European Campaign, an Infantry Major. This is typically Harry Marshard. There is a happy determination about the man that would have put him at the top of whatever field he might have picked. We can only be grateful he chose the wide field of music, where his contagious joy can be shared with so many.

The demand for Harry Marshard's music has grown by such leaps and bounds that he is now a big business. Marshard Music with headquarters in Boston, is one of the biggest music enterprises of its kind in America. With close to 300 top musicians and a many as 21 units under the Marshard banner, he can now furnish a dance orchestra of from 5 to 50 pieces for just about anywhere on the North America continent, south of the DEW line, and does.

As usual, I agonized over what to share first for the season.  It doesn't matter much, but I always make a big deal about it and worry too much.  So I finally decided on this rare release from the Columbia Record Club.  It's part of a much larger series that seems to have come out in a couple of different versions, yet this is the first and only copy I've ever seen.  The characters seem to span the whole series, so if you really like this, you might want to seek out the other parts from the series, though I think this is the only seasonal edition.  If not, let me know and I'll hunt it down for next year. This record was something I found at a great record store in Clearwater, Florida, recently. Most of my music comes from thrift stores and junk stores and little hole in wall places that most people wouldn't even think to frequent, but that's the kind of place that has the kind of stuff I'm looking for.  Cheap and forgotten, that's the music for me.  But this was at an actual record store, and it's rare that I find stuff in a record store I've not seen before.  When I saw this, I knew it needed to go in my collection.  I think I recorded it just a day or two later, which is also rare. Some things have been in my collection for a decade or more before I get around to recording it. And this record didn't disappoint.  It's a lot of fun and I know you'll enjoy it.  It even features some off-brand Chipmunks here and there to add into the fun. There's a different date on the cover than on the vinyl.  I'm thinking maybe the vinyl was in a set before it got put into it's own sleeve for single release.  Just a theory, but I'm running with it. Anybody have this one as a kid?  This is Christmas At Dr. Fun's Funhouse (Columbia Record Club D-228, Stereo, 1966).

I think the plan this season is to share out a new record each day, and then a new remaster as well.  I've been doing this sharity thing since 2005, and there are a lot of records that I shared out at the beginning that I need to revisit. Whether I have a cleaner new copy, or I can use my new software tricks to make it sound a little better, I want to go back to some of those old shares and do something a little better. And I'm going to start that for this year with this old share from year one, a great record from the fine folks at Muzak. People like to make fun of Muzak, and they've certainly been guilty of making a lot of really bad music over the years, but I'm a fan of their Christmas music, a few albums of which have been released over the years. This one actually came with the names of the musicians attached, a rarity in the world of Muzak. Please have a go at Muzak Christmas (Muzak AA 36, Stereo, 1980)!

I've got no idea how I came across these, but they were bookmarked for a reason. The first one is by Greet Hornet. I'd never heard of them. The song was good enough, some solid garage crunch, to go look for a photo. In doing so, I found out that they're from the Netherlands and they have recorded more than one song. But one song is all I've heard and I dig that one. They could suck on everything else. The other song below is by the Returnables, another band I'd never heard of. They sound like they've listened to their fair share of the Jam. What the hell.
